The $1.5 billion National Enrichment Facility (NEF) in Southeastern New Mexico is the first major nuclear facility to be licensed in the U.S. in three decades, and the first ever to be awarded a combined construction and operating license. The facility will be capable of producing enough enriched uranium to supply 25% of U.S. power plant demand by 2013.
URS Corporation has been awarded a contract to provide construction services to build the NEF. Providing construction services for the NEF is a major expansion of our role at the site, where we have been providing related construction-management services since mid-2006.
The facility will include approximately 1 million enclosed square feet. Buildings will be constructed of nuclear safety related concrete. Construction activities are under way, and it is estimated there will be more than 600 construction personnel during peak construction. The NEF is scheduled to begin production mid-2009 with all construction completed in 2013.
