Combined Cycle Project

  • Client: Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA)
  • Location: San Juan, Puerto Rico
  • Scope: Construction
  • Total Installed Cost: $250 Million
  • Completed: 2009

The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) revived an effort to install 464 megawatts of fuel-efficient, combined-cycle power generation in its existing steam plant after a failed attempt with another contractor.  The addition increases output by more than 100 percent.

Rust Constructors' scope of work includes construction of reinforced-concrete foundations, turbine pedestals, a 285-foot-high concrete stack, structural-steel erection, and fabrication and installation of large diameter piping and equipment. Rust is also responsible for testing, commissioning and start-up.

In addition to working in extremely tight quarters on a fast-track erection schedule, Rust has evaluated, restored and upgraded equipment left behind from the original contractor.

As a separate project, Rust is rebuilding a fire-damaged power station for PREPA in Palo Seco, Puerto Rico. The $112 million project includes structural rehabilitation, new equipment and wiring.
